How to Measure AI Indexing and Citation Impact
A three-layer framework
- Crawlability: index coverage, sitemap inclusion, crawl frequency changes after updates, and robots/canonical issues.
- Understanding: consistent title/description/body, JSON-LD presence, stable entity definitions and internal links, clear information architecture.
- Citability: conclusion-first paragraphs, checklists/tables/steps, high-intent question coverage, and explicit scope and verification notes.
How to collect signals
- Webmaster tools: track index coverage, crawl stats, sitemap results, and errors.
- Server logs: confirm crawlers visit new pages and key hubs; watch for excessive 404s and redirects.
- Sampling real queries: test representative questions across AI channels and record citations and extracted passages.
- On-site behavior: measure whether users can move from category pages to answers and to action pages.
How to iterate
Prioritize updates by business value × current weakness. Upgrade structure (TOC, checklists, comparison tables), improve internal links (glossary, related FAQs, action pages), then sample-check quality using the AIO Checker.
